Brown & Richie, a small Staffordshire pottery, produced these coupe soup bowls in the 1920s–30s using a painstaking hand-coloring process: scenic transfers were laid down first, then touched by hand in translucent pink, green, yellow, and blue underglaze. The backstamp reads "Genuine Oriental Gardens, From Original Copper Engravings, Hand-Colored Under Glaze, Made in Japan for Brown & Richie Ltd." By the 1930s, the cost of this polychrome method made it commercially unsustainable, and the process was largely abandoned — making surviving sets like this one genuinely scarce.
