The lid is inlaid with shell art in the form of a lotus flower, set against a rich mahogany-like grain, with red satin floral damask lining the interior. The brass-tone latch is ornate, with an opening for a small lock, and the hinges are all intact — ring holders inside hint at its original use as a jewelry box.
