A hand painted Dutch girl in blue and white, this early Blue Ridge Southern Pottery Betsy Jug is the first style of Betsy ever made, and the very first Betsy to grace our shop.

  • Maker: Blue Ridge Southern Pottery
  • Pattern: Betsy Jug, Blue
  • Materials: Ceramic, hand made and hand painted
  • Dimensions: 8.5 inches Tall
  • Origin: Erwin, TN, USA
  • Era: Antique, 1920s
  • Condition: Very Good antique condition — a small chip on the tip of the spout, one small "ding" on her left elbow, and lots of crazing, as expected with this type of early pottery. All photographed for you. Please review photos closely before purchasing, as all sales are final.

As with all Betsys, this one features a Dutch girl holding flowers, with her Dutch hat as the pour spout and her gaze always turned to the side. She is hand made and hand painted, so hand washing is a must to maintain her condition.

A perfect gift for a Blue Ridge Pottery collector, she will look great in a country or farmhouse setting and is ideal for your favorite blue and white pottery lover.

Blue Ridge pottery came from Southern Potteries, Inc. of Erwin, Tennessee, a plant that opened around 1917 at the encouragement of the Carolina, Clinchfield & Ohio Railroad and was incorporated under that name in 1920. Its earliest dishes were decal-decorated wares sold as "Clinchfield." The company later turned to hand painted designs that looked like folk art, employing local women as decorators, and by the mid-1940s it was the largest hand painted pottery in the United States. The plant closed in 1957.

We also carry other Blue Ridge Southern Pottery pieces, including the hand painted Celandine serving platter and Carnival teacup, luncheon plate, and fruit dessert bowls, or browse our shop for more pottery to round out your collection.
