A graceful girl in a black and white gown holds a delicate basket adorned with three hand applied flowers in yellow, pink, and blue. Five and a half inches tall, hand painted, and in excellent condition — no crazing, no chips or cracks, all fingers intact. The Wales foil sticker is long gone (they almost always were), but the quality is unmistakable. She works beautifully as a small bud vase, a scissors or teaspoon holder at a garden party table, or simply as a figurine on a shelf — she's suited for all of it.
Wales was a trademark first used in 1950 by New York Merchandise Co., 32 W. 23rd St., New York, and last renewed in 1975. Wales was an importer rather than a manufacturer — the pieces were sourced from various unnamed makers in Japan. Wales pieces from the 1950s are collected for their quality and the particular charm of their mid-century Japanese porcelain craftsmanship.
A lovely gift, a cottage or grandmillennial shelf addition, or a sweet find for a Wales Japan or figural vase collector.
