This die-cut mechanical Valentine features a fireman, his arm moving up and down on a pull-tab mechanism as if calling out to a girl in a burning building. Two are available, each in excellent unused condition with its original 1950s envelope.

A dramatic pick for a greeting card collector or anyone who wants a Valentine with a story built in.

In the 1950s, American greeting card manufacturers turned the humble Valentine into something closer to a toy. Die-cut construction, pull-tabs, and moving parts turned a simple paper card into an interactive keepsake — the kind of card children carefully tucked back into its envelope rather than tossing aside. Mechanical Valentines like this one reflect the postwar boom in domestic paper goods manufacturing, when card companies competed on novelty and craftsmanship as much as sentiment. Because these cards were often played with before they were ever mailed, well-preserved examples with their original envelopes are increasingly hard to find.
