A century-old trinket box from one of Japan's most celebrated porcelain makers — and it shows.

Stamped on the base: "TT Takito, Hand Painted, Made in Japan." Based on the logo, this piece dates to between 1922 and 1944. The Takito Company, founded in Nagoya in 1880, was among Japan's most distinguished porcelain exporters — exhibiting at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago and the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, and celebrated during the Art Deco era for their intricate moriage and lusterware. This box shows why: a large hand-applied orange rose dominates the lid, surrounded by smaller flowers; the entire body is embossed with swirls outlined in gold; both longer sides carry additional hand-applied flowers and leaves. There is one chip on the side — white on white, visible to the touch more than the eye — photographed for you. The flowers are in perfect condition.

On a vanity, a dressing table, or a collector's shelf. A rare find from a maker that closed in 1948 — pieces in this condition seldom surface.
