A jewel casket from the golden age of American metalwork — small enough to hold in one hand, ornate enough to stop a room.
Made by Weidlich Brothers Manufacturing Co. of Bridgeport, Connecticut between 1900 and 1925, this gilt cast metal casket is embossed on every surface with scenes of lush gardens, period figures, and stately homes. Inside, floral printed silk with silk cording. Hinged lid. Marked on the base: "W.B. Mfg. Co." and "Pat Appld For." Weidlich Brothers was founded in 1901 by Louis and Charles Weidlich and became one of America's most respected makers of silverplated and ornamental metalwork — candlesticks, inkwells, clocks, jewelry caskets. Louis Weidlich died in 1950 and the company closed shortly after, acquired by Web Silver. Pieces like this rarely surface in this condition.
