Every surface tells a story — mountain, temple, tree, and bridge, all rendered by hand in a single piece of wood.
This round Japanese box from the 1960s is carved with an unhurried precision that speaks to a different era of craft. Mt. Fuji rises on one side, temples and arched bridges appear across the rest, and the lid carries a small turned wooden finial at its center. The interior is plain and smooth — the carving is reserved entirely for the exterior, where it belongs. Two small floral shapes carved on the underside of the lid are believed to be the artist's mark; there is no other maker's signature. The patina is warm and genuine, and the surface wear is exactly what you'd hope for in a piece of this age.
Display it on a desk, a bookshelf, or a side table — filled with small keepsakes, or simply as a sculptural object that rewards a second look. A grounding piece for any room with an appreciation for Japanese craft or Chinoiserie.
