A girl in a blue hat and scarf. Belgium, the 1940s, Côte d'Or, and almost certainly Muriel Dawson.
Côte d'Or — Belgium's storied chocolatier since 1883 — produced this large round tin in the 1940s to early 1950s, identifiable by the older Côte d'Or logo. The illustration is unsigned, but extensive research points to Muriel Dawson (1897–1974), the New Zealand–born British illustrator who studied at the Royal College of Art and became celebrated in the 1920s and 1930s for her paintings of children, mothers, and animals. Her originals are collected internationally. This tin is the affordable alternative to owning her work — a big, beautiful round lid portrait of a little girl in a blue hat and scarf. Some minor dents (mostly visible from inside), scuffs and wear consistent with age; interior very clean. A genuinely rare find.
An exceptional piece for the Belgian tin collector, the Muriel Dawson admirer, or anyone who wants a piece of illustrated art history in their home.
