Two pivotal moments in American history — rendered in tile, framed in solid wood, and ready to hang. This is a set of commemorative wall plaques featuring reproductions of two of John Trumbull's most celebrated Revolutionary War paintings: Battle of Bunker's Hill and The Surrender of Lord Cornwallis.
Trumbull was no armchair historian — he served as an aide to George Washington and was present at Roxbury, Massachusetts on June 17, 1775, the very day of the Battle of Bunker's Hill. He witnessed General Joseph Warren, a Massachusetts politician and member of the colony's Committee of Safety, fall to British fire that day. Battle of Bunker's Hill was completed in 1786. The Surrender of Lord Cornwallis, depicting the events of October 19, 1781 — when British Lieutenant General Cornwallis surrendered to combined American and French forces at Yorktown, Virginia, effectively ending the Revolutionary War — was completed in 1820. Trumbull traveled to Yorktown in 1791 to sketch the landscape firsthand before painting it.
Believed to be produced by Mid-State Tile in the 1970s. Each tile is set in a solid wood frame with a decorative hanging hook. A wonderful gift for a history teacher, history collector, or anyone decorating a colonial-style home, library, or office — and a natural fit for America's 250th anniversary.
