This is the original — marked 1964, made in California by Gladding McBean (then operating as Interpace), hand painted and embossed in the pattern that would go on to become one of the most recognized in American ceramic history. Pink roses and green leaves on warm off-white earthenware, the handle shaped like a wooden branch with a gentle groove for the finger. Quieter than bone china, warmer than porcelain. Entirely itself.
Desert Rose was introduced in 1941 as Franciscan's second embossed hand-painted pattern, following Apple the year before. Together they became the company's defining work — produced for decades across multiple owners and continents, though the California originals remain the most collectible. This cup is oven safe; hand wash recommended to preserve the hand-painted finish.
A wonderful replacement piece for a collector building out a vintage set, or a single beautiful cup for someone who appreciates American craft. Great for a birthday, housewarming, or as a seasonal accent. We carry several other Desert Rose pieces while supplies last.
