Four different etchings, a round form that's rarely seen, and a century of quiet dignity.
This antique metal tea caddy from Hong Kong is genuinely unusual — most paktong or pewter caddies are found in the quatrefoil shape; this one is round, standing on three tab feet with a compression-fitted lid. What makes it truly exceptional is the variety of its carvings: four distinct scenes encircle the body — bamboo, flowers, flowering grass, and a highly detailed lakeside scene with a house on the shore, a large tree, and a figure in a canoe. Typically these pieces carry only Chinese characters or one repeated motif. Embossed on the bottom: "Made in Hong Kong." The metal is a deep pewter tone — darker than silver. Paktong (an alloy of copper, nickel, and zinc prized by the Chinese for small decorative accessories) and pewter were both widely used for export pieces from Hong Kong in the early 20th century; the exact alloy here is unconfirmed. Surface scratches and scuffs as expected on old metal of this age.
A rare and refined piece for the collector of Asian antiques, chinoiserie, or fine tea wares.
