This is a wood fan with a hand painted silk leaf. The wood has swirls in gray and brown, and the leaf has red and peach roses with smaller white flowers in between. The pen inscription on the back, "Madrid 1971 Julio" (July), is a reminder of where and when it was purchased.
These make great gifts for Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, and birthdays.
Fans have been around since Roman times, but these hand held folding fans were introduced in the West during the 17th century and quickly became popular. They were not only great for keeping cool, they also kept bugs and unworthy suitors away, and they became a fashion accessory, much like a brooch or bracelet, decorative pieces of art to be worn and shown. Today we love them as home decor, whether framed and hung on the wall, opened on a stand on a tabletop, used as a backdrop for figurines, or several displayed on a wall; fans can create an atmosphere of sophistication, romance, Bohemian, Victorian, fun, quirky, or tropical, depending on the fan and how you use it.
