The Scherenschnitte tradition — German scissor-cut silhouette work — came to America in the 18th century, where it became known as "silhouettes" after Etienne de Silhouette, the French finance minister whose austere policies and fondness for paper-cut portraits made the term synonymous with anything done cheaply and simply. By 1941, the art form had been popular for generations; a complete, signed family set in this condition is genuinely uncommon to find today.
