Paden City Glass Company was known for its mouth-blown glass and intricate etched pieces — but the sterling silver overlay work is in a category of its own.
Founded in West Virginia in 1916 by David Fisher, Paden City produced glass that was never signed, relying instead on paper labels that rarely survived. Sterling silver overlay pieces like this one were expensive to produce even in their era, and very few were made after the mid-1930s, making this a genuinely uncommon find. This 12.5" sandwich plate / tidbit tray features a hand-applied sterling silver floral overlay — marked "sterling" — in what appears to be a lily pattern, with visible pistils and few petals. The center spire handle is also adorned in silver. A small area of wear on the handle is photographed; the plate itself is excellent. Paden City closed in 1951.
