This 12.5-inch sandwich plate carries a sterling silver floral overlay, marked "sterling," in what appears to be a lily pattern, with visible pistils and few petals. The spire center handle is also adorned in silver. The small area of wear on the handle is photographed; the plate itself is excellent.

A wonderful gift for the silver enthusiast, the Paden City collector, or anyone who hosts with a sense of history.

Paden City Glass Manufacturing Company opened in 1916 in Paden City, West Virginia, under David Fisher, who had previously managed the New Martinsville glass company; his son Samuel took over after his death in 1933. The company began with molds from the recently closed Higbee Glass Company and made tableware in more than twenty colors, selling many of its blanks to decorating firms that etched, gilded and silver-overlaid them. It opened its own etching and decorating department in 1924. Its glass was never signed and relied on paper labels that rarely survived, which is why a "sterling" mark on the overlay is a welcome clue. The factory closed in 1951, a victim of the move to automation.
