This set was produced by F&F Mold & Die Works beginning in 1949 as a promotional giveaway for Quaker Oats customers who saved box tops from Aunt Jemima Pancake Mix, and this pair has survived in remarkable condition for its age. Aunt Jemima stands in her red dress, matching headscarf, white apron, and white neckerchief — the holes on her head are arranged to spell S; Uncle Mose, in his red jacket and yellow pants with top hat in hand, has holes arranged to spell P. Uncle Mose was originally named Uncle Rastus, renamed in the early 1910s to avoid confusion with the Cream of Wheat mascot of the same name — a change reportedly inspired by Chicago chef Frank L. White (1867–1938). Black Americana collectibles are a meaningful and complex category: this pair honors Nancy Green, one of the first African-American models and the advertising world's first living trademark, while preserving an unvarnished record of American commercial history.
