Every inch of the surface is alive with detail: full-feathered peacocks in vibrant blues and greens, tiny flowers, blades of grass, and gold throughout, rendered in the Imari style that originated in the Arita region of Japan's Kyushu island in the 17th century. A red band circles the lower body and the top opening is rimmed in gold. The crazing visible across the surface is entirely intentional — a deliberate design element of this style, not damage. Imari ware takes its name from the port of Imari in Saga Prefecture, through which porcelain from the nearby Arita kilns was exported to Europe beginning in the 17th century, becoming enormously influential on European ceramics.
