Hallmark grew from a postcard business Joyce C. Hall started in Kansas City in 1910 at the age of 18. Operating as Hall Brothers, the company began printing the Hallmark name on the back of its cards in 1928, a nod to the mark London goldsmiths stamped on their work as a guarantee of quality, and made it the official company name in 1954. Still family-owned and based in Kansas City, Hallmark expanded well beyond greeting cards into giftware and household pieces like this Bon Appetit recipe box from the 1970s.
