He trained as a lawyer. Ran a textile factory. Then, at 30, walked away from all of it to paint. The Pantheon never looked better for it.

This is an original signed and numbered limited edition watercolor lithograph by Urbain Huchet — believed to be one of his Pantheon series, depicting a 19th-century Parisian street scene of elegantly dressed crowds, horse carriages, and the Pantheon rising behind it all. Numbered 145/350, signed in pencil by the artist lower right; edition number penciled lower left. Circa 1960s. One available. Unframed.

Urbain Huchet was born in Rennes, France in 1930. He studied law, owned a textile factory, and then in 1960 made the decisive turn: he would paint. He spent his first three years as an artist in Pont-Aven following the path of Gauguin and Émile Bernard, then moved to Paris, then traveled — Europe, the Middle East, Peru, Mexico, Egypt — finding inspiration everywhere he went. His work is typified by a fluid, gestural approach to form and color that makes it immediately recognizable: loose, luminous, alive with movement. He is accomplished in oils, watercolor, and lithography, and has produced at least 300 lithograph editions, all printed by the artist himself in workshops in Paris and Cannes. His exhibitions have been held in New York, London, New Orleans, and extensively in Paris and Egypt.

This piece carries the warm age toning of paper that has lived for sixty years — beautiful and authentic. Residue on the reverse from previous framing. Framing is recommended to preserve it and show it at its best.

A wonderful piece for an Urbain Huchet collector, a lover of French Post-Impressionist art, a Francophile, or anyone whose wall deserves an original signed work by one of France's most distinctive mid-century painters.
