This is an original watercolor lithograph, signed in pencil by the artist lower right and numbered 145 of an edition of 350, penciled lower left — believed to be part of Huchet's Pantheon series, depicting a 19th-century Parisian street scene of elegantly dressed crowds, horse carriages, and the Pantheon rising behind it all. Urbain Huchet was born in Rennes, France in 1930. He studied law, owned a textile factory, and then in 1960 made the decisive turn: he would paint. He spent his first three years as an artist in Pont-Aven following the path of Gauguin and Émile Bernard, then moved to Paris, then traveled — Europe, the Middle East, Peru, Mexico, Egypt — finding inspiration everywhere he went. His work is typified by a fluid, gestural approach to form and color that makes it immediately recognizable: loose, luminous, alive with movement. He is accomplished in oils, watercolor, and lithography, and has produced at least 300 lithograph editions, all printed by the artist himself in workshops in Paris and Cannes, with exhibitions held in New York, London, New Orleans, and extensively in Paris and Egypt.
