Charlotte Becker (1907–1984) was born in Germany and came to America at age five. She studied at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York — one of the most prestigious art schools in the country, founded in 1859 — and went on to create thousands of magazine covers, art calendars, advertisement prints, and illustrations, virtually all centered on babies and children. Her ability to capture innocence, warmth, and the particular softness of early childhood made her one of the most beloved illustrators of her era; today her original works sell for thousands of dollars at auction. This print was produced by Louis F. Dow Company, one of the two largest calendar companies in the United States at its peak, also known for their WWII-era military pin-up kits illustrated by Gil Elvgren.
