A rose named for a countess. A print made by one of the finest botanical chromolithographers of the 19th century.
This is an original antique chromolithograph of the Rose H.P. Countess of Rosebery — produced by Belgian master chromolithographer Pierre Joseph de Pannemaeker (1832–1904), pencil-dated 1880 and estimated to circa 1877–1914. One available. Unframed.
De Pannemaeker was among the most accomplished botanical chromolithographers of his era, producing work of exceptional detail and color fidelity for the great horticultural publications of the 19th century. This print bears the warm, saturated palette and fine tonal gradations that distinguish his finest work. The subject — a Hybrid Perpetual rose named in honor of the Countess of Rosebery — is rendered in full bloom with the scientific precision and artistic beauty that made Victorian botanical illustration one of the great art forms of its age.
The paper has developed a warm age toning — darker in person than in photographs — that is entirely authentic and, for those who love genuinely antique paper, deeply beautiful. Two small spots (one in the largest rose, one near a leaf on the left), both photographed and disclosed. Tape on the reverse suggests the piece was once framed. Suitable for framing; we recommend framing to preserve it.
A wonderful piece for a botanical print collector, a rose enthusiast, a Victorian art lover, or anyone who wants something genuinely old and genuinely beautiful on their wall.
