The porringer is one of the oldest forms in Western domestic life — a shallow bowl with a single flat handle, used for centuries to serve porridge, broth, and soft foods to children and the infirm. By the nineteenth century it had become a treasured christening gift, the kind of object meant to be engraved, kept, and handed down.
This one is by Wilton RWP in their proprietary Armetale alloy — a carefully developed aluminum-based material designed to look and feel like pewter without the risks of lead, which traditional pewter once contained. Armetale is tarnish-resistant, won't crack or chip, and holds both hot and cold temperatures longer than most metals. The scrolled handle is elegantly formed, and the bowl is generously proportioned. Wilton kept the Armetale formula a closely guarded family secret from 1963 until they sold the business in 2010.
Today porringers serve beautifully as décor, as a coaster for a small plant or candle, a catch-all for loose change or jewelry, a condiment bowl, or a nut dish. Or give it as it was originally intended — a deeply meaningful baby gift for someone who loves beautiful, lasting things.
