The border mimics nailed wood planks, with the scene rendered in a quietly compelling gray-brown. The backstamp reads Colonial Homestead by Royal, Underglaze circa 1950, Patented N53. Royal China Company was founded in 1934 in Sebring, Ohio, by Beatrice L. Miller, William H. Habenstreit, and John Bert Briggs. Denied a bank loan because she was a woman, Miss Miller persisted, and employees initially agreed to work without pay until the business took off. By the 1940s, Royal was the world's largest manufacturer of Willow Ware, and followed that success with the iconic Currier & Ives line in 1950. At its peak in 1965, Royal was the largest pottery company in the U.S., pulling in $6 million in sales; operations ended in 1986 after several ownership changes and a rebuild from a major fire. Complete Colonial Homestead sets are genuinely difficult to find today.
