An absolutely gorgeous wall pocket. Behind the geisha you can see through a window to a cherry blossom with lovely pink flowers, and the sides carry lotus flower designs in blue and red. There is lots of beautiful moriage in bright gold, with gorgeous colors and plenty of detail. It is pre-drilled for hanging (there is no drainage hole) and is marked on the bottom: "Satsuma Made in China." This is a very heavy piece, so please keep that in mind at check-out.

Great for an Oriental decor or chinoiserie lover, as a wall vase for dried or silk florals, or hung on its own as a conversation piece.

Satsuma ware takes its name from Satsuma Province, in the south of Japan's island of Kyushu, where potters have worked since the late 1500s. Its fine crackled ivory glaze, painted with enamels and gold, became a sensation in the West after it was shown at the 1867 Paris Exposition, and Satsuma-style wares followed in great numbers. Moriage, the raised, beaded slip decoration seen here in gold, is a hallmark of the style. This piece, marked as made in China, is a later production in the Satsuma tradition.

We also carry a hand painted Satsuma-style egg paperweight with birds and cranes in moriage, or browse our shop for more Asian-inspired décor to round out your collection.
