Those blue shaded eyes are either charming or haunting — possibly both.
Made in Japan in the 1950s, this hand-painted Toby Jug depicts an old man wearing a cap, with a distinctive colorway: deep blue-shaded eyes, warm brown cheeks, and the kind of expression that seems to follow you around the room. The Toby Jug form — a face-shaped pitcher or creamer — has been a collector's favorite for centuries, and this mid-century Japanese version has real character. Minor paint wear on the lips and visible crazing; no chips or cracks.
