The "Paul and Virginia" pitcher form originated with the United States Pottery Company (1852–1858) and was based on Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre's 1788 novel Paul et Virginie — a tragic love story set on the tropical French island of Mauritius. Originals from the 1850s are largely in museums; this example was made from a hobbyist reproduction mold and signed "DJS 5-71" on the base — the artist's initials and date, May 1971.
