In 1945, Kellogg's began tucking small lithographed tin pinback buttons into boxes of Pep cereal as prizes — one of the most beloved promotional campaigns in American breakfast history. The series featured characters from popular comic strips of the era, and Sandy, the shaggy loyal dog companion of Little Orphan Annie introduced to Harold Gray's strip in January 1925, was among the most sought-after.
