The German Spitz — the word "Spitz" meaning pointed in German, referring to the breed's sharp features — originated in cold-climate regions of Scandinavia, Russia, and Asia before becoming especially associated with Germany.

In the 1940s and 50s, small lithographed tin pinback buttons depicting dog breeds were popular novelty items and collector's pieces — tiny portraits of beloved breeds rendered in vivid color on ¾-inch metal buttons. These are original, not reproductions, in very good vintage condition with the expected wear of items now 70+ years old.
