Ornaments: Mercury Glass Ball, Blue with Three Little Pigs Decal, Vintage 1950s

Time and handling have clearly caught up with this little blue mercury glass ball, but it holds something we've never come across twice: an original Three Little Pigs decal, worn but unmistakable.

The ball still carries traces of its original blue mercury coating, though decades of handling have thinned it to a soft, chippy patina all over. The Three Little Pigs decal, rendered in a simple mid-century illustration style, remains legible despite the fading and surface loss around it, and the metal cap shows spotting and rust.  

This one isn't for a collector chasing mint condition — it's for someone who loves the story a well-worn piece tells. The finish carries that "chippy" well-worn patina some collectors go looking for — not enough to call it primitive, just aged in the way only real vintage use can produce.

Mercury glass ornaments decorated with licensed character decals gained popularity in the years following Disney's 1933 animated short "Three Little Pigs," a box-office sensation that spurred a wave of merchandise built around Practical, Fifer, and Fiddler Pig. Small glass ornament makers of the era — largely anonymous cottage manufacturers — applied simple decals to plain mercury glass balls to cash in on the craze, but survival rates are low, since both the decals and the thin glass itself were easily damaged. A well-worn example like this one, decal still legible after seventy-plus years, is a genuine rarity rather than ordinary wear and tear.
