By midcentury, Japan's Christmas exports had embraced a softer, happier style of elf, and this one carries a rare variation: a blow-mold face that sets him apart from his stuffed, celluloid-faced cousins. His red and green felt body stays flat rather than padded, a quirk of the era's manufacturing that collectors prize.
