A smiling bisque porcelain astronaut glows from within, a rare space-age night light made by Aladdin Giftware of Los Angeles before 1963.
Maker: Aladdin Giftware
Pattern: Astronaut
Materials: Bisque porcelain and metal (base)
Dimensions: 6.5 inches Tall, 4.5 inches Wide
Origin: Los Angeles, CA, USA
Era: Vintage, 1950s–1963
Condition: Excellent — a working lamp with nothing wrong with it. What looks like rust on the base is actually brushed gold paint; there is a bit of rust on the light bulb socket clips, a replaceable part if that's a concern. Please review photos closely before purchasing, as all sales are final.
It is a USA astronaut smiling from behind his spacesuit helmet. A corded light bulb (cord included, with a non-polarized plug) plugs into a regular outlet, and the cord has an on/off switch, all in working order. The bulb is inserted from the bottom and lights the figure from the inside. The piece retains its original label, which reads: "Underwriters Laboratories Inc, UL Listed Portable Lamp, Issue No. 78569, Aladdin Giftware, L.A. Calif." The label spells out "Calif." rather than the two-letter "CA" the Post Office began using in 1963, which helped us date the lamp to before then.
A perfect gift for a child who loves space travel and perhaps dreams of becoming an astronaut one day, and a highly valuable piece for a collector.
This night light belongs to the years when the space race filled children's rooms. NASA was founded in 1958, Alan Shepard became the first American in space in 1961, and John Glenn orbited the Earth in 1962. Figural lamps like this one turned that excitement into a nursery companion that glowed all night.
