  • Made in USA
  • Vintage:  1950's - 1970's (estimated)
  • Details:  This is a very nice beer stein that commemorates the Panhard et Levassor first modern transmission in 1895.  The mug is authentic pottery, but we are concerned that it may not be authentic McCoy Pottery.   If you're a McCoy Pottery collector, please read on, if you just really like the mug, as we did, and want it to enhance your bar or mug collection, then you're fine either way.  The first issue we have is, we've seen this exact mug with the "McCoy USA" mark on the bottom, but our mug is marked only "USA".  A second issue is the word "USA", it is typically hand carved in the clay on McCoy pieces, this one is stamped with some type of tool.  Third, we have done a lot of research and found these decals available for sale, still today online, any potter can basically make these.  Lastly, and unfortunately, there are a lot of both Fake McCoy pieces, and Reproductions of McCoy pieces in the market today and we don't want to mislead anyone, this may not be the real McCoy.  Collectors can review the pictures and make their own determination.  We know McCoy made a lot of beer steins commemorating special events, people, and everything from coat of arms to cars, this could be real.  If you find this is authentic, well then, you got a great deal!  Otherwise, it is a really nice mug and will be enjoy by old car enthusiasts and make a great piece of bar decor.

Panhard originally called Panhard et Levassor, was started in 1887 in Paris by two French gentleman, Rene Panhard and Emile Levassor.  They were one of the first motor vehicle manufacturers and are credited with starting many modern standards.  In 1895 Panhard et Levassor was credited with the first modern transmission.  Unfortunately, shortly after, during the Paris–Marseille–Paris race, Levassor suffered an injury and died in Paris a year later.  The company has been through many mergers and acquisitions.   In 2018 Renault, ACMAT and Panhard merged and formed a new brand called Arquus located in Versailles.
