This mortar has been grinding, pounding, and serving for somewhere between eighty and one hundred years — and it looks every bit of it, in the best possible way.

Hand-turned from native Puerto Rican hardwood, with a distinctive domed foot designed for stability and a series of carved rings along the pedestal that give it a sculptural quality well beyond its utilitarian purpose. The patina is extraordinary — the outer surface shifts from deep stain to lighter grain, the interior dark and smooth from decades of use, the original glaze now a soft memory rather than a finish. There is a large crack on the rim, entirely consistent with its age and history, and photographed thoroughly for your review.

Purchased directly in Puerto Rico, this reflects the rustic, traditional woodworking artistry of the island's craftsmen — pieces like this were made to be used, passed down, and used again.

Display it on a kitchen counter holding herbs, spices, or wooden utensils. Use it as a pencil holder on a desk. Place it on a shelf where its patina and form can be appreciated as the functional sculpture it is. Or simply put it where it belongs — back in a kitchen, doing what it was made to do.
