There are very few objects that connect you directly to a specific moment in history. This is one of them.
This original Franklin D. Roosevelt cigar box label was produced in the 1930s — during the presidency of one of the most consequential leaders in American history, at a time when cigar companies routinely issued special brands honoring political figures their customers admired, or who paid handsomely for the association. After the election cycle passed, the brands were discontinued. Many of these beautifully printed labels were never used — which is exactly how this one survived.
The craftsmanship is extraordinary. This is a large-format label at 9.0 by 6.25 inches, heavily embossed and gilded, printed in the chromolithographic tradition that made American commercial printing of this era among the finest in the world. The portrait of FDR is rendered with genuine dignity — the kind of treatment reserved for a man the cigar company clearly wanted to associate with quality and distinction. The smaller portrait-only version of this label is relatively common. This large format, in original unused NOS condition, is a rare find.
Frame it for a study, a library, a bar, a home office, or alongside other political memorabilia. At 9.0 by 6.25 inches it fits a standard 9x6 or 10x8 frame beautifully. The paper shows age-appropriate yellowing on the reverse — the face is vivid and pristine.
A wonderful gift for a history enthusiast, an FDR collector, a political memorabilia collector, a cigar aficionado, or anyone who appreciates the intersection of American history and extraordinary commercial art.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882–1945) served as the 32nd President of the United States from 1933 until his death in office in 1945 — winning four presidential elections, a record that prompted the 22nd Amendment limiting presidents to two terms. He guided the nation through two of the greatest crises of the 20th century: the Great Depression, which he attacked with his sweeping New Deal economic programs, and World War II, which he led America through until his death just weeks before Germany's surrender. Rarely photographed in his wheelchair, Roosevelt had contracted polio in 1921 at age 39 and was paralyzed from the waist down — a fact he managed with remarkable discretion throughout his presidency. He is consistently ranked among the three greatest American presidents, alongside George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.
