Two figures in traditional Japanese wedding kimonos — unglazed clay, hand painted with the fine, unhurried detail that has defined Hakata dolls since the 17th century. The faces are sweet and specific; the kimono patterns are rendered with care. One retains its original "Made in Japan" paper sticker. Please note both have minor paint loss noted below — photographed for your review.
Hakata dolls originate in Hakata, a historic district now part of Fukuoka on Japan's southern island of Kyushu. They became widely known in the West when American soldiers brought them home after World War II, and Japan began exporting them worldwide shortly after. The unglazed finish is traditional and preferred — glazing dulls the surface; the matte clay is what gives Hakata its particular warmth and depth. Today they remain one of Fukuoka's most iconic crafts.
A beautiful wedding or anniversary gift, a piece for a Japanese art collector, or a display for anyone who loves the quiet dignity of traditional craft. Lovely for a housewarming or as a meaningful keepsake.
