A young girl perched on a bale of hay, book open in her lap, completely absorbed — headscarf tied neatly, neck bandana in place, the whole scene painted with the quiet detail that the best Occupied Japan porcelain is known for. She has a Hummel-like quality without being a copy of anything; she's simply a girl who found a good spot to read. Stamped on the bottom: "Made in Occupied Japan," which dates her precisely to the postwar Allied occupation, between 1945 and 1952. Excellent condition for a piece of this age.
The "Occupied Japan" mark was required by Allied authorities on all Japanese exports during the occupation period — pieces marked simply "Japan" predate or postdate this window. It's a collector's mark that tells you exactly when something was made, and pieces from this era are among the most sought after in Japanese export porcelain.
A lovely piece for an Occupied Japan collector, a book lover's shelf, a farmhouse or cottage interior, or anyone who appreciates a small figurine with a very specific and genuine history.
