Two choir boys in classic red and white gowns with red bow ties, hand painted faces full of seasonal cheer, both still wearing their original "Wales Japan" foil stickers. At five inches tall they have a pleasing presence — taller than most choir figurines of this era — and the pair makes a natural centerpiece for a holiday vignette. There is some color loss on the red gowns, photographed for your review; otherwise they're in good shape for their age.

The Wales trademark — a crown with the Wales name — was first used in 1950 by New York Merchandise Co. of West 23rd Street, New York, and last renewed in 1975. Wales was an importer rather than a manufacturer, sourcing pieces from various Japanese factories and distributing them through American gift and department stores. The original foil stickers on both pieces place them squarely in that mid-century import tradition.

A charming pair for a Christmas collection, a holiday mantel, or a collector who appreciates a piece that still carries its original label.
