Two choir boys in red flocked robes trimmed with real Dresden lace — not spaghetti lace, the genuine article — black bow ties, gold shoes, mouths open in song. The flocking gives the red a deep, velvety texture that photographs beautifully and looks even better in person, and the Dresden lace adds a delicacy that sets these apart from the usual mid-century choir figurines. Both are marked "Japan" on the bottom and in truly wonderful vintage condition for pieces of this age.
Dresden lace was a technique developed in Germany in which real lace was dipped in liquid porcelain and fired, leaving behind a delicate ceramic replica of the original textile. It became one of the most prized decorative techniques in fine porcelain and was later adopted by Japanese manufacturers producing export pieces for the American market. Finding it on figurines in this condition, nearly eighty years on, is a genuine pleasure.
A refined addition to a Christmas display, a serious holiday collector's shelf, or a gift for someone who knows the difference between Dresden lace and everything else.
