Fenton introduced its glass teddy bear figurines in 1985 and later expanded the line into Birthstone Bears, each marked with a small colored heart corresponding to a birth month — this one in emerald green for May. Fenton Art Glass Company itself dates back to 1905, founded by brothers Frank L. and John W. Fenton in Martins Ferry, Ohio, and later known for the iridescent "Carnival" glass it introduced after moving to Williamstown, West Virginia. The company closed its factory in 2011, leaving pieces like this one as a sentimental, increasingly hard-to-find piece of Fenton's American glassmaking legacy.
