These round 1970s clip-ons center a large faceted heliotrope rhinestone with a pointed center, bordered by two rows of square amethyst rhinestones in gold-tone settings. Heliotrope stones, also called Watermelon or Vitrail, are typically Czech, German, or Swarovski in origin; these are unmarked but the quality is evident.
The color shifts dramatically with the light, which is part of the extraordinary appeal of this stone, wear with solid colors to let them do what they do. Color varies dramatically under different lighting; all variations photographed. An exceptional gift for the rhinestone collector, the color-lover, or anyone who wants jewelry that genuinely catches the eye.
Heliotrope, or Vitrail, rhinestones get their shifting color from a special coating applied during manufacturing, a technique especially associated with mid-century Czech and Austrian glass houses.
