Johnson Brothers began in 1883 when brothers Alfred and Frederick Johnson took over the bankrupt Charles Street Works in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, building on family ties to the well-known Meakin pottery dynasty. The firm became known for durable "White Granite" earthenware and later a semi-porcelain body that combined the look of fine china with everyday sturdiness, which made Johnson Bros a favorite import across America for its affordability and durability. This set carries the Windsor Ware backstamp used on the Dover pattern, produced from 1960 to 1965 in a handful of colorways, with mulberry among the least commonly found today. Each plate is marked on the back as "A Genuine Hand Engraving, Windsorware, Johnson Bros England," noting the under-glaze printing that made the pattern resistant to fading from acid and detergent.
