  • Made in Japan
  • Vintage: circa 1970's - 1980's (estimated)
  • Details:  This mini plate is an absolutely gorgeous representation of the art of "Chokin" where images are engraved in copper and then gilded with gold and silver. The images are created by etching pure copper and then gilding it with silver and gold. The engravings were originally created to decorate the armament of the samurai warriors. This art form was handed down for over eight hundred years. This plate has two birds on a branch, surrounded by leaves and flowers and butterflies.  These plates are highly collectible, people appreciate all the work that goes into making them, the detail is absolutely beautiful.  The tiny flowers, veins on the leaves, even the bark on the tree branch are fully captured.  The plate is porcelain with a 24KT gold border, and gold verge.  The back has a sticker that reads:  "The Art of Chokin. 24K Gold Edged, Made in Japan".   Chokin items include vases, clocks, lamps, and much more but plates are the most collected items.  A gorgeous decoration for a bookshelf, table top or your wall.  We think it makes a wonderful dish in a powder room to hold guests rings while they wash their hands.

Chokin art has a long standing history in the Japanese culture.  During the 12th century, Japanese Chokin artists used this art to decorate the armor, weapons and other military supplies of notable samurai. Chokin artists also decorated shrines using this method.  Chokin designs range from scenes of fierce dragons to those of gentle blossoms. Since it is a traditional Japanese art form, Chokin art always depicts images considered native to Japanese culture. Examples include geisha, dragons, Japanese style bridges, legends, ocean scenes, flowers native to the country and actual Japanese landscapes. Chokin art is an ancient form of Japanese pictorial gilding. Copper is engraved and then the picture is gilded with silver and gold.
