This is an original Engagement Brand inner cigar box label — a 1930s chromolithograph produced for F. X. Smith's Sons Co. of McSherrystown, Pennsylvania. The scene is delightfully specific: a young man sits at his desk, smoking a cigar and gazing at a picture of his fiancée — an open box of Engagement brand cigars on the desk beside him. The overhead desk light, the romantic reverie, the open cigar box — it is a perfectly composed slice of 1930s domestic life, rendered with the meticulous detail and rich embossing that made this era of cigar label design extraordinary. Notice the desk lamp — that style is very much back in fashion today.

F. X. Smith's Sons Co. was started in 1862 by Francis Xavier Smith in his basement in Irishtown, Pennsylvania — eventually growing to six factories in McSherrystown employing 500 workers rolling over six million cigars a year. For 156 years they manufactured their cigars in the USA. By 2000 they were the last cigar maker in the area; by 2018 they could no longer survive financially and moved operations to the Dominican Republic — ending one of the longest continuous runs in American cigar manufacturing history.
