Sam Butcher began drawing his teardrop-eyed "Precious Moments" children in the early 1970s as gifts for family and friends, later selling the artwork on greeting cards and posters through a company he co-founded with Bill Biel called Jonathan & David. A 1978 partnership with Enesco Corporation turned 21 of his drawings into porcelain figurines, launching a collector phenomenon that grew into a global brand; Butcher went on to build the Precious Moments Chapel in Carthage, Missouri, and remained the artistic force behind the brand until his death in 2024.
