A reader note: this book contains a lot of violence and animal training practices we don't condone today. It has educational value regarding the Yukon Gold Rush, and it opens conversations about how our treatment of animals has changed, but please consider how young a child you share it with. We believe young adults 14 and over are a good audience for this story.
A good choice for a young adult reader, or for a collector of illustrated classics editions.
Jack London (1876–1916) set The Call of the Wild in the Klondike Gold Rush of the 1890s, following Buck, a dog taken from a California home and sent north to pull sleds in the Yukon. The novel was published in 1903 and remains one of the best-known adventure stories in American literature. Great Illustrated Classics, from Playmore and Waldman Publishing, adapted classic novels like this one for younger readers with illustrations throughout.
