Whitman Publishing began in 1916 as a subsidiary of the Western Printing & Lithographing Company of Racine, Wisconsin, after Western took over the assets of a bankrupt Chicago children's book publisher. It grew into one of the most prolific children's publishers of the 20th century, producing books, puzzles, and games for generations of American children. Whitman's Tell-A-Tale line launched in 1944 as a budget-priced counterpart to the company's larger storybooks, retelling classic fairy tales and nursery stories in a small, sturdy format designed for the very youngest readers; the series ran for decades and became, alongside Little Golden Books, one of the defining formats of mid-century American children's publishing.
