Johnny Gruelle created Raggedy Ann in 1915, reportedly reviving and naming a homemade rag doll for his daughter Marcella by combining two James Whitcomb Riley poem titles, "The Raggedy Man" and "Orphant Annie." The first Raggedy Ann storybook was published in 1918, followed by Raggedy Andy in 1920; the characters became one of the most enduring toy franchises in American publishing, with new authors and illustrators continuing their adventures for decades after Gruelle's death in 1938.
