Peggy Cloth Books were among the earliest washable fabric books made for babies in America, and Charlotte Steiner — who illustrated many of the early titles — brought an irresistible warmth to each one. This 1965 copy is in remarkable condition: colors still vivid, fabric crisp, pinked edges with only the most minor fraying.

Charlotte Steiner (1898-1981) grew up in Vienna and fled Europe with her husband in 1938 as Nazi persecution of Jewish families intensified, arriving in New York that October. She began writing and illustrating children's books almost immediately, publishing more than seventy titles between 1939 and 1972 — gentle, insightful stories built around the everyday emotions of very young children.
