Bernard Waber studied art at the Philadelphia College of Art after serving in World War II, then worked in commercial art in New York before magazine art directors encouraged him to try children's books. His first, Lorenzo, was published by Houghton Mifflin in 1961; the following year The House on East 88th Street introduced Lyle, who went on to star in more than a dozen books over Waber's five-decade career and now has a Literary Landmark plaque of his own on East 88th Street in Manhattan.
