Paulette Bourgeois created Franklin after watching a rerun of M*A*S*H, in which a character remarked that if he were a turtle he'd be afraid of his own shell. The idea became Franklin in the Dark, published by Toronto's Kids Can Press in 1986 after six US publishers had turned it down. Bourgeois and illustrator Brenda Clark went on to collaborate on more than two dozen Franklin books, a series that has sold over 60 million copies worldwide and been translated into nearly 40 languages.
